See The USA - Day 7 - Rapid City, SD
July 8, 2005 - We left about 9 am to go the 50 miles east to Wall, SD. Naturally we had to walk through Wall Drug. It's a "trinket" paradise. Debbie refused to stick her head through the wooden "squaw" so I could take her picture. We then headed down to the Badlands. When you enter you have the choice of the paved road or the dirt road to the right. We chose the dirt road. After about 5 miles of washboard we decided the paved road would be better. However we did get to see the large buffalo herd by going the dirt road. Enough of the home cooked meals for today. It's a Red Lobster night! The first one we've seen since we left home.

The front of Wall Drug. It takes almost a whole block.

Among the trinket shops, there was a chapel.

T-Rex looks at you when you walk in the Backyard area. Every twelve minutes lightning flashes and he opens his mouth and ROARS.

Here's the entrance to the Badlands.

Bad Lands.

I remember seeing pictures of us kids doing just this. Of course I don't remember it, just the pictures. So I figured I should have a picture much older and fatter.

A beautiful view.

Here's the buffalo herd.

Now for some stupid buffalo tricks. Okay, ROLL OVER!

Good Buffalo!

Watch your step or you'll end up...

Here!

The dirt road tour sure did ugly up the truck. It'll be headed for the car wash when we get back!

That's better!

A great supper at Red Lobster. And the prices were actually a little cheaper than they are at home. This sunset was just as we arrived back at the park.

Total Miles driven today: 194
Today's Avg MPG 17.5
Total Trip Miles: 1947
Today's Notes: We expected it would be cooler by going the northern routes. Yeah right. It was 100 here today! Although the humidity was only 20%, it was still HOT. I e-mailed the Governor of Minnesota to give him my opinion of the rest area closings. Apparently tourism is not welcome in MN. About 8 pm we realized there is a race track in downtown Rapid City. And I think it's right next to us! They finally stopped about 1 AM this morning. When I raced, the tracks were out in the boonies. Not RIGHT DOWN TOWN!
Tomorrow's Plans: Our plans are to go to Deadwood to do the cowboy thing. Then Sunday we'll leave for Montana.
